Drums - May 7th 2004

We arrive at Volume 11 Studios in Raleigh, North Carolina at noon. The studio has been cleared, and John begins to set up and mike his kit. Dislocated Nate (Volume 11 engineer) assists in hooking up all the cabling to the wall which runs to the control room. After setting up the drums and miking them to his satisfaction, John warms up for a while and Nate goes for a bite to eat.

After a quick final soundcheck, Robert takes his place in the guitar iso room and the tape rolls. We do a run through of 2 songs and review them in the studio room. All sounds good, so we move on to record the rest of the material. John is on the money throughout the session, laying down machinework precision double bass and intricate handwork for all six songs we've chosen to record.

After the initial recording, we all gather in the room again to review the material recorded to fine tune the recordings. We find very few areas we need to rework, and rapidly move through them after discussing exactly what needs to happen where.

Once this has been completed, we focus again on the entire session, listening even closer to minute details for any inconsistency in the beats we're looking for and what's on the recording. There aren't any.

We wrap up the session very excited about the progress we've made in such a short amount of time. John was definitely in the zone, and blew through the songs with no difficulty. By 6pm, we've loaded out of the studio and Nate has begun to download all the data from the session to a format we can import into our new Pro Tools rig which we will be using for mixdown and various recording sessions for the demo.
